The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has reported that 6.2 million women and girls in Yemen are at risk of violence and in urgent need of life-saving assistance this year, as they face hunger and the collapse of the healthcare system amid a decade-long war.
The UNFPA Yemen office stated on X: “6.2 million women and girls are at risk of various forms of violence, including abuse and exploitation, in 2025 due to the prolonged humanitarian crisis in this country, which is among the poorest in the Arab world.”
The fund also noted that nearly five million women and girls of reproductive age have access to only limited reproductive healthcare services.
Last week, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher stated that Yemen has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Middle East.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen, which will enter its eleventh year later this month between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi group, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and pushed millions to the brink of famine.
