An official source at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a change in the date and venue of the first Executive Committee meeting following the recent elections.
At the request of Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, a new member of the Executive Committee, the meeting will be held in Accra, the Ghanaian capital, on April 26 instead of Morocco. This change coincides with the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations opening match in Cairo.
The meeting venue was moved from Morocco to Ghana at the request of newly elected Executive Committee member Kurt Okraku. Morocco was consulted on this change, especially since the Ghana Football Association is planning a large ceremony to mark the recent elections. Executive Committee members will depart Accra directly for Cairo to participate in the continental championship.
The meeting will discuss the appointment of two members to be selected by CAF President Patrice Motsepe, following the statutes. There is pressure from Central and East African federations to appoint Ethiopian Isayas Jira Bosho, reflecting a desire for geographic balance within the confederation. Ethiopia is seeking to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations.
The meeting will witness a vote on the five vice-president positions at CAF, with several names emerging, including Minister of Sports Walid Sadi, Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o, and Ghanaian Kurt Okraku. North Africa is expected to play a major role in Motsepe’s decisions, especially after Cameroonian Seidou Mbombo Njoya and Senegalese Augustin Senghor left the Executive Committee.
The fate of the current CAF Secretary General, Congolese Véron Mosengo-Omba, will be discussed amid divisions over his continued tenure. The Governance and Compliance Committee’s report following the recent investigations into Omba’s actions during his tenure will be presented. This meeting is expected to be full of surprises and fateful decisions.
The recent elections saw six African members of FIFA’s executive committee win seats, including five Arab names. Walid Sadi and Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o also joined the CAF executive committee by acclamation. Motsepe was also re-elected as CAF president for a second term, a move that had been expected for months.
