The British newspaper “The Telegraph” reported on Thursday that Iran has decided to withdraw its military forces from Yemen, thus abandoning its support for the Houthis, amid intensified US airstrikes against the group.
An Iranian official explained that this move aims to avoid any direct confrontation with Washington, as Tehran has begun to reduce its support for its regional proxies to focus on the challenges it faces from the US.
Another source added that Iran no longer sees the Houthis as capable of enduring for long after the decline of their support from Hezbollah and the Syrian regime.
The source confirmed that “the main concern in Tehran now is Trump (US President Donald Trump) and how to deal with him,” adding that security meetings are entirely focused on this file, without addressing the armed groups that Iran previously supported.
For his part, a source in the Iranian regime indicated that Tehran now believes that the Houthis “will not be able to hold out for long,” adding that the group has lost part of the support it used to rely on from Hezbollah and Bashar al-Assad regime, which makes its continued existence illogical.
At the same time, US forces announced the deployment of attack aircraft and soldiers to the region to reinforce military operations against the Houthis.
In this context, the 124th Fighter Wing of the US Army announced last month the deployment of A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft with 300 soldiers to the Middle East to support operations against the Houthis.
