Yemen Monitor / Socotra / Exclusive:

Academic and community activist Ahmed Al-Rumaili Al-Socotri has shed light on the struggles faced by dozens of students from Socotra who study outside the island in areas such as Hadramout, Aden, Sana’a, and Al-Mahrah.

Al-Rumaili stated, “These students, who returned home to spend Ramadan with their families, are now facing a serious crisis in getting back to their universities after the holiday.”

In a Facebook post, he wrote: “The airline is charging students $200 for a one-way ticket. On top of that, there are no available flights anytime soon, forcing them to remain at home for extended periods even though classes have already resumed.”

He continued, “They have no choice but to travel by sea, boarding fishing or cargo boats that lack even the most basic safety standards—putting them at serious risk.”

He added, “Students spend at least 40 hours at sea, during which they suffer from fear, nausea, hunger, and thirst. In the worst cases, they face the risk of death due to rough waves and marine turbulence.”

Al-Rumaili pointed out that these sea journeys are not new; in past years, there have been fatal incidents due to boat sinkings during travel.

He questioned why no planes are being allocated for student transport, despite flights being available for tourists. “Neither Saudi Arabia, the UAE, nor the local authorities have managed to provide even a single plane to transport these students,” he said.

Al-Rumaili concluded his post with a prayer: “We ask God to protect our dear students from any harm.”

In recent years, several tragic accidents have occurred, with some students losing their lives during sea voyages.

Amid these conditions, students are questioning why no air transport has been arranged for them, calling on local authorities and the Arab Coalition to provide solutions for air travel—especially as planes continue to operate for tourism.
