U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Monday that the US has “destroyed” the Houthi movement, while his defense secretary warned the Yemeni group of even worse days ahead.
Trump made the remarks during a meeting at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “We have destroyed the Houthis and stopped them from launching missiles and drones,” Trump stated.
He added, “We dealt firmly with the Houthis and inflicted serious damage on them. We eliminated a large number of their leaders and experts.”
Trump also called on Iran to stop supporting the armed Houthi group in Yemen.
Earlier on Monday, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth vowed to intensify strikes on the Houthis in the coming days, as the US air campaign against the Yemeni movement entered its fourth week.
“We have many options and pressure tools to impose on the Houthis and Iran,” Hegseth said. “We have a range of ways to apply pressure on the Houthis and their Iranian backers.”
The Trump administration launched a wide-scale military campaign against the Houthis on March 15, describing it as a preemptive response to the group’s continued attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The campaign has included intensive airstrikes targeting strategic Houthi sites such as weapons caches, command centers, and military leaders.
However, the campaign has faced considerable challenges, including limited success in destroying the Houthis’ underground weapons arsenal, which remains difficult to detect and neutralize.
