New statements by French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau have raised questions about the existence of pressure on the man to stop delving into the issue of Algerian-French relations, which are at a critical stage, threatening a break due to the hostile practices of some right-wing ministers in François Bayrou’s government.
Although the mission that led Bruno Retailleau to the Epinal region in northeastern France is of a partisan nature, in the context of the race with his rival Laurent Fouquet for the leadership of the right-wing “Republicans” party, which no longer carries the values of De Gaulle except in name, Retailleau did not hesitate to include Algeria in his political calculations.
In a statement to the press, Retailleau said: “I say it loudly, no one can silence me. It’s my freedom. I will keep my free speech and I will not change.” These words followed the expression of his desire for the Algerian authorities to release the Algerian writer, naturalized French citizen Boualem Sansal, who is in prison and threatened with a heavy sentence at the end of this week, after the public prosecutor at the Casablanca Court in Casablanca, DC, sought a ten-year prison sentence for him.
It is clear from the French Interior Minister’s words that he is under pressure from someone in the power circles in Paris, to push him not to delve into the issue of Algerian-French relations, due to the recklessness he has shown on more than one occasion, through provocative and irresponsible statements towards the Algerian state.
Since the end of last week, Bruno Retailleau has become the target of many French circles, both political and media, who smelled in the positions and statements of this minister from Algeria, the smell of cheap exploitation of this file in the race for the presidency of the right-wing “Republicans” party, a position that opens the way for the winner to run for the French presidential elections expected in 2027.
During a session of the French parliament last Wednesday, David Giroux, a member of the “Fatherly France” party, strongly attacked his country’s interior minister, accusing him of employing the Algerian-French relations file for electoral purposes, in response to Bruno Retailleau, who said that Algeria is the one who is attacking France.
The deputy said: “It is Retailleau who is attacking France,” by trying to damage its relations with Algeria, with or without occasion.
After the issuance of the prosecutor’s petition against the accused Boualem Sansal, many politicians and media professionals in France, including those on the right, revolted against Bruno Retailleau, blaming him for Algeria’s rigidity in this file, which only brought his country insult after insult, and predicted that Sansal would spend the rest of his life in prison, due to the false arrogance of the interior minister, which explains Retailleau’s talk about no one being able to silence him.
An article published in Le Parisien two days ago sharply criticized the interior minister for his direct responsibility in “aggravating” the situation with Algeria.
The newspaper quoted a minister in the government of François Bayrou as saying that the executive branch complained about the provocative statements and positions constantly expressed by Retailleau, which only brought him and his country “one slap after another.” The same article hinted at a desire to silence Retailleau.
The same article also hinted that there is a desire by the French authorities for Retailleau to leave his place in the government quietly, because of his intransigence in playing an escalatory role with Algeria, but he is unable to provide realistic solutions to the crisis, according to the same source, which talked about the role of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, convicted in several cases of corruption and bribery, in what is happening.
Le Parisien reported that Retailleau recently visited Sarkozy in his residence, where he is subject to “electronic bracelet” measures, after a judicial decision to imprison him.
