Warnings have been renewed in Morocco regarding the dangers of corruption, which has spread throughout all aspects of the state and has expanded into society.

Corruption has become a true “structural dilemma” threatening the social and economic stability of the Kingdom, in the absence of “genuine” political will and “deterrent” decisions to combat it.

In this regard, the Federation of the Democratic Left party criticized the rampant corruption in state structures, the continued policy of impunity, the cover-up of its leaders, and the persecution of voices denouncing it and demanding accountability for its perpetrators.

In a statement, the party’s political bureau noted with “grave concern” the exploitation of the month of Ramadan to “carry out charitable works that conceal electoral bribes,” calling for “the implementation of the organic law that allows the authorities to dismiss anyone proven to be engaging in activities that undermine transparency and integrity.”

In this context, the party denounced “the successive trials and prosecutions aimed at expanding the circle of authoritarianism and enacting economic and social policies that perpetuate marginalization, impoverishment, and unemployment, while continuing to normalize rent-seeking and corruption, which have become an integral part of the state structure and its institutions, in the absence of any responsible and genuine accountability.”

The political bloc also expressed deep concern over what it described as “the entrapment of the political sphere, through the government’s monopolization of all decisions and the marginalization of civil society organizations by adopting laws and legislation that restrict the fundamental rights and freedoms of Moroccans by disregarding all human rights obligations.”

In the same context, a Moroccan news website addressed, in an article, the sensational scandals that have dragged dozens of people involved in the embezzlement of public funds to investigation and trial on “serious charges”. After years of postponement by judicial authorities, these cases are “forgotten.” The website noted that “in most cases, these files end with the permanent release of powerful defendants, sometimes with temporary sentences, or with acquittals that overturn previous prison sentences. This raises questions about who is exploiting justice in corruption cases and who is responsible for perpetuating impunity.”

The article explained that “since 2000, the judicial process for handling corruption cases has been significantly slow, with some cases languishing on court shelves, and others still under investigation since 2015, such as the emergency education reform program.”

According to the article, this situation “encouraged the judicial authorities to control the course of some prosecutions, whether by drowning them in an endless series of postponements or issuing controversial rulings, most of which end without the recovery of stolen funds or the accountability of those involved.” It criticized the judicial handling of the marriage of power and money, and the intermingling of political interests with narrow personal interests.

This reality, according to the same article, “has prompted anti-corruption voices to demand a more rigorous approach to financial corruption cases, especially since the judicial authorities have been ignoring those involved in financial crimes rather than curbing the phenomenon. This is evidenced by the number of trials conducted in recent years that resulted in the release of defendants after short periods of detention, which reinforces this conviction.”
