While far-right Minister Bruno Retailleau continues to threaten to play the “balance of power” card to pressure Algeria, Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot argues for the restoration of what he described as “close relations.” The French Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, brazenly said: “We are on the verge of resigning.” The latter is on the verge of resigning.

With great impudence, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said: “For months, I have been the only one calling for a balance of power with Algeria.” He seemed determined to move forward with the policy of escalation, talking about further restricting access to French territory and even unilaterally canceling the 1968 agreement if Algeria refuses to receive deportees from French territory, defying President Emmanuel Macron, who has repeatedly expressed his rejection of the deadline engineered by Bruno Retailleau with his Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, according to an interview with RTL radio station on Wednesday.

In contrast, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed on Tuesday, March 11, his country’s desire for “good relations” with Algeria, in a stance diametrically opposed to that of his cabinet colleague, Bruno Retailleau, who has shown an obsession with all things Algerian.

During a session at the French National Assembly, the foreign minister said he hoped that the Algerian authorities would “start a new phase” in bilateral relations by addressing the issue of migration.

“France certainly wants to have good relations with Algeria, a neighboring country with which we have close ties… For this to happen, relations have to calm down, but calm cannot be imposed unilaterally,” he added.

Despite the calming tendency that can be detected in the words of the head of French diplomacy, he nevertheless tries to skip the truth in diagnosing the crisis that has hit bilateral relations since the change in the French position on the Sahrawi issue on July 31, when the Elysee Palace aligned itself with the Moroccan regime on an issue that is very sensitive for the Algerian authorities, namely the issue of Western Sahara.

Barrot spoke about the issue of migration and the imprisonment of French writer Boualem Sansal, who is in the hands of the Algerian judiciary, but he completely ignored the core of the issue, which is the change in the French position on the Sahrawi issue, an indication that Paris is not serious about overcoming the worsening crisis.

In this context, right-wing media outlets spoke of a crisis at the top of the power pyramid in Paris, due to the divergent views in dealing with the Algerian authorities, which showed an unprecedented rigid stance in response to French pressure, in a way that made the ruling “nomenklatura” in Paris confused in managing this file.

Le Figaro newspaper quoted anonymous sources as saying that the French president met with his interior minister “head to head” to discuss ways to manage the crisis with Algeria, after days of the “insult” suffered by Prime Minister Francois Bayrou and his interior minister, Bruno Retailleau, in what was described as the “deadlines and threats” method, which the Algerian authorities rejected in full, and threatened a response that the French side may not expect.

According to the same source, the six-week deadline was not on the table, but was improvised by Bayrou in the press conference that followed the meeting of the ministerial committee dedicated to discussing the migration file, in a clear maneuver to take Retailleau out of the equation, even though all indications are that he was the one who implicated the prime minister in talking about the deadline.

With the intensification of the conflict in the wheels of the French administration, the idea of the resignation of the interior minister was raised, after the French president refused to go along with his extreme positions, but his supporters do not wish this to happen, and if it does, the justification is ready, which is to devote himself to the race for the presidency of the “Republicans” party, so that he can run for the presidential elections in 2027, which seems to have brought Retailleau out of his calm by describing his rival, Laurent Fouquier, as a “dog.”
