Minister of Interior, Local Assemblies and Country Planning Ibrahim Merad and his Tunisian counterpart Khaled Nouri reaffirmed Wednesday in Algiers the will of Algeria and Tunisia to work and cooperate jointly to tackle negative phenomena in the border areas, such as smuggling and irregular migration.
In a press statement following an expanded bilateral meeting between the two ministers and officials of the two countries’ security bodies, Mr. Ibrahim Merad recalled the importance of the meeting for the two brotherly countries, particularly to coordinate and set measures and regulations to avoid the aforementioned negative phenomena.
The meeting was organized under the guidance of the leaders of the two countries, he added, noting that other meetings “will be held in the future to evaluate the work we have done to tackle the negative phenomena of criminality, terrorism and smuggling.”
Regarding the development of the border areas between Algeria and Tunisia, the interior minister confirmed the existence of committees working in this framework, noting that “special committees may be set up to combat and eliminate smuggling.”
“It is about the fate of our two countries and our citizens, who must be protected and enable them to live normally and continuously in security and safety,” he said, stressing that “Algeria’s security is Tunisia’s security and Tunisia’s security is Algeria’s security, which has always been emphasized by the leaders of the two countries.”
“The meeting dealt with several points, including smuggling and its impact on the economy of the two countries and how to tackle this phenomenon,” said the Tunisian Interior Minister, noting that it was also an opportunity to discuss how to cooperate and exchange information in a timely manner.
The meeting also dwelt on the phenomenon of irregular migration and drugs, as well as the importance of further work to develop the border areas.
The meeting allowed to assess the pace of bilateral cooperation between the two ministerial sectors and the pace of security and operational coordination between the various security agencies by evaluating joint measures to secure the borders and confront transnational organized crime, especially the fight against irregular migration and smuggling in all its forms.
They also addressed issues related to the development of border areas in light of the work of the bilateral committee for the development of border areas and the recent recommendations of the follow-up committee held in January in Tabarka, Tunisia.
